Bus Accident Statistics

Commercial transportation companies are subject to various FMCSA and California laws, and buses are no exception. Buses are referred to as “common carriers” because they transport passengers. Common carriers are required by California law to exercise greater caution than other professional drivers.

Because bus operators and drivers frequently break the law, public transportation users are more likely to suffer injuries or pass away.

According to the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), 232 people lost their lives in bus accidents in 2017. Compared to 2016, when 234 bus accidents resulted in fatalities, this was 1% less.

Intercity buses were to blame for 13% of all bus accidents that resulted in fatalities in the United States between 2007 and 2017. School buses made up about 40% of the total, and public transportation buses made up about 35%. In 2017, 13 intercity buses in the US were involved in fatal accidents. Since the FMCSA began keeping track, this was the fewest bus accident ever recorded.

117 people lost their lives in school bus collisions in 2018, according to a study by the National Safety Council (NSC). In the interim, 3,939 injuries and 277 fatalities were reported in California.

According to the study, California’s bus and truck collisions caused 277 fatalities and 3,939 injuries.

Most bus accidents are the result of human error. Accidents can occur when bus drivers aren’t paying attention or don’t follow protocol. Other negligence, such as failing to maintain the bus in good condition or provide bus drivers with the proper training, could result in a bus accident.
