According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a bicyclist was hit and killed by a vehicle late Friday night in Lancaster, July 15, 2022.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of Beech and Avenue J.
Firefighters and paramedics from Station 33 in Los Angeles County arrived on the scene and began performing CPR on the victim. Sadly, their efforts were in vain, and the victim was declared dead on the spot.
Not far from the victim, the vehicle at the scene of the collision was seen with significant front-end damage, and about 36 feet away on the ground from the front of the vehicle, a bicycle was visible.
The car’s driver stayed at the scene and didn’t seem to be hurt. All traffic lanes were blocked for one block while the collision was being investigated.
Despite the 911 calls being for a pedestrian struck by a car, the victim was riding a bicycle, according to witnesses at the scene.
Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
Bicycling for short distances is becoming more and more common. This is largely a result of the fact that biking is a cheap and sustainable form of transportation. Over the past few years, there has been an increase in bicycle-related accidents.
Between 2007 and 2018, 8,908 cyclists were killed in the US. This number was multiplied by 12 to determine the average. The number of cyclist fatalities in 2018 reached an all-time high of 857, setting a new record.
In California, the number of accidents involving bicycles has steadily increased in recent years. Last year, 155 people lost their lives in bicycle accidents.
Four percent of all car accidents in California result in a cyclist dying, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. With a death rate more than twice as high as the national average, California is the state with the highest level of risk for cyclists.
Bicycle accidents can result from a variety of causes. Among the most frequent reasons for traffic fatalities in the United States are distracted driving, failing to yield the right-of-way, failing to look before pulling out, running a red light, and other traffic violations.
