Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycles are less safe than other vehicles because they are less stable and visible to other drivers, so they are less safe. Unlike passengers in a car, motorcyclists aren’t shielded from harm in an accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle riders are 26 times more likely to die than passengers in passenger vehicles and five times more likely to be injured in a traffic collision.

Even though motorcycles only make up 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.6% of all vehicle miles driven in the U.S., they were responsible for 14% of all traffic deaths, 18% of all occupant deaths, and 4% of all occupant injuries in 2020. The use of helmets has a direct effect on motorcycle deaths.

From 2019 to 2020, the number of motorcycle riders and passengers who died went up by 11%, while the rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled went up by 23%. The death rate has increased by 27% over the past ten years. More motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes had been drinking than drivers of any other type of vehicle.

Motorcyclists should take safety measures to avoid accidents. Wearing protective gear, such as a helmet and sturdy clothing, can help to reduce the risk of injuries in a crash. They should also be aware of their surroundings and avoid dangerous situations to keep themselves safe on the road.
