According to the California Highway Patrol, a woman driving drunk caused numerous collisions and seriously hurt several people, including a 2-year-old, in Fresno Friday, July 22, 2022.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred at 4:50 a.m. on Highway 180 just east of Chestnut Avenue.
She could not stop her 2006 Chrysler 300 when the 2002 Toyota Tacoma in front of her slowed down because, according to CHP, she was intoxicated.
As the cars blocked the road, several more collisions happened after the Chrysler struck the Toyota’s rear.
Major injuries were sustained by Johnson and a 2-year-old in her car, who were both taken to Community Regional Medical Center, according to CHP.
The girl was in a car seat, but according to the police, it was not installed correctly.
The CHP described the injuries suffered by a 34-year-old Fresno man who was riding in the Chrysler as moderate when he was taken to the hospital.
According to CHP, Johnson was detained on suspicion of DUI.
The crash is still under investigation.
DUI Crash Statistics
A fundamental human right is the safety of the roads. Drunk drivers endanger not only their own lives but also the lives of innocent people. In California and across the nation, much work needs to be done to cut down on the number of people who drive after drinking.
Nearly 10,000 people per year are killed in DUI accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Around 18 percent of fatal auto accidents, according to the CDC, involve alcohol or drugs.
According to the NHTSA, drunk driving accidents claim the lives of about 30 Americans daily. Drunk driving is to blame for more than a quarter of all traffic-related fatalities in the US. More than 60% of these drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, have blood alcohol concentrations above the permitted limit.
In 2018, 127,250 DUI arrests were made in California, and 474 of those involved minors under 18. This is an increase from the statewide total of 123,548 DUI arrests made the year before. 4,944 of them had criminal charges brought against them. The number of DUI arrests fell by 5% in 2017.
