FATAL TRAIN ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Although the number of train wrecks has decreased over time, they can still occur at any time. As examples, consider the derailment of an Amtrak train in Washington State or the death of a pedestrian earlier this year. Every year, hundreds of train accidents are reported in the United States. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recorded over 8,000 train accidents in 2021.

In 2020, there were 2,131 grade crossing accidents involving cars and trains. In the United States in 2021, 237 people died and 653 were injured while crossing the street. In 2021, these states accounted for approximately 68 percent of all highway-rail grade crossing collisions.

In 2018, human factors caused more train accidents than track or equipment failures. Because it is widely assumed that trains run mostly on autopilot, train accidents are frequently attributed to equipment or infrastructure malfunctions.

Your life should not be jeopardized by taking public transportation. Although cheap transportation may result in a lack of rule enforcement or attention to safety, this is not always the case. Drivers of public transportation should receive extensive training before transporting passengers.
