A man was killed after getting struck by a freight train in the Central Valley on Saturday morning, July 2, 2022.
The Hanford police officers responded just after 9:00 a.m. to a report of a freight train colliding with a pedestrian near the Amtrak train station, in the vicinity of 7th Street and Santa Fe Avenue.
According to investigators, a man who was reportedly in a wheelchair was declared dead at the scene.
Detectives claim that there are few details and that it is unclear why the man was so near the railroad tracks while a freight train was moving through the area. The train stayed in place on the tracks up until about noon.
The Hanford Police Department is still investigating the crash.
The Kings County Coroner’s office is trying to identify him in order to notify the man’s next of kin.
Fatal Train Accident Statistics
The number of train wrecks has fortunately decreased over time, but they can still occur at any time. Just two recent examples include the Amtrak train derailment in Washington State and the death of a pedestrian earlier this year. Every year in the United States, hundreds of train accidents are reported. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recorded over 8,000 train accidents in 2021.
In 2020, there were 2,131 accidents involving cars and trains at grade crossings. 237 people were killed, and 653 were injured while crossing the street in the United States in 2021. These states accounted for 68 percent of all highway-rail grade crossing collisions in 2021.
In 2018, more train accidents were caused by human error than by mechanical failures on the track or equipment. Train accidents are frequently blamed on equipment or infrastructure malfunctions because of the widespread belief that trains operate primarily on autopilot.
There is no reason why taking public transportation should put your life in jeopardy. When traveling on a budget, rules and safety precautions may be neglected. Public transportation drivers should receive extensive training before taking passengers on their vehicles.
