Fatal Truck Accident Statistics
The economy cannot function without commercial trucks. The American trucking industry transports goods worth billions of dollars every year. Other motorists’ safety is jeopardized because there are so many semi-trucks on the road.
Semi-truck collisions claim more lives than any other type of road traffic accident. Trying to avoid a large truck is difficult because of its enormous size.
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the number of fatalities involving big rig trucks has increased by 30 percent since 2009. Big rig negligence resulted in the deaths of nearly 4,000 people in traffic accidents in 2017.
California has the highest number of fatalities and injuries for commercial truck crashes. In 2019, there were 3,316 fatal accidents, which resulted in 3,606 deaths. 44 people lost their lives in 320 truck-related collisions.
Move as far away as possible from the blind spot of a commercial truck to avoid a collision. Passenger side blind spots are much larger than those on the driver’s side, so this is the worst position to be in. When making a lane change, always pass on the driver’s side.
