Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Thousands of people perish in hit-and-run incidents each year. This statistic is particularly concerning because avoiding such tragedies would be relatively simple.
The effects of a fatal hit-and-run accident can be devastating because roads are dangerous places. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates 2,300 fatal hit-and-run accidents in 2016. This number has remained largely stable over the past few years. Even though this figure accounts for less than 1% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents, thousands of people still pass away yearly.
The average age of those hurt in fatal hit-and-run accidents is 41 years old, and 81% of them are men, while only 19% are women. These victims typically die from blunt force trauma (37% of the time), internal bleeding (21% of the time), and brain injuries (16%).
To make our communities safer places for everyone—especially those most vulnerable—we must educate ourselves about how to prevent these types of accidents.
