Fatal Mobility Scooter Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
As the number of mobility scooter drivers has increased, so has the number of fatal hit-and-run accidents involving mobility scooters.
It’s no secret that mobility scooters are a popular form of transportation for the elderly and disabled. They’re convenient, cost-effective, and can help you get around in a way that doesn’t require full use of your legs.
In fact, in 2012, there were more than 30,000 hit-and-run accidents in the United States. This represented a 5% increase over the previous year.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that nearly 45% of all hit-and-run crashes involved pedestrians or bicyclists. Almost half of all those pedestrian/bicyclist victims were killed by their vehicle’s driver.
Most of the time, hit-and-run drivers don’t realize what they’ve done until it’s too late—they leave their victims on the side of the road with no way to get help. That’s why it’s so important to prevent these accidents before they happen.
