Fatal Head-On Collision Statistics

Head-on accidents have a higher fatality rate than other types of car crashes. In a head-on collision, the collision force is increased by the combined weight and speed of the two vehicles involved. Head-on collisions result in a significant amount of energy being released. This increased energy has the consequence that injuries are more likely to be fatal in this type of crash as a result.

Combined, head-on, rollover, pedestrian, and bicycle crashes account for only 6.1% of all car accidents but result in over one-third (34.5%) of traffic-related fatalities. Although there are approximately 123,000 head-on collisions that account for only 2.0% of all US crashes – they still account for 10.1% of US fatal crashes.
