Fatal Head-On Crash Statistics
When two vehicles collide directly with each other while traveling in opposite directions, it is known as a head-on collision. Often, this type of collision results in devastating injuries or death. In many cases, victims suffer head trauma from hitting the inside of the vehicle or going through the windshield.
As a result, many victims of head-on collisions are killed, permanently disabled, or left with catastrophic injuries that require expensive care for an entire lifetime. In the United States, head-on collisions account for only about 2% of all accidents. Head-on collisions are most common in rural areas, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In this case, a wrong-way driver caused the head-on collision. Every year, approximately 355 people are killed in the U.S. due to wrong-way drivers. With the average number of wrong-way collision deaths at 265, 1.34 fatalities per wrong-way death are calculated. These accidents are caused by various reasons, such as distracted driving, drunk driving, driver over-fatigue, and mechanical failure.
