Fatal Semi-Truck Rear-End Crash Statistics

When one car crashes with the vehicle directly in front of it, it is called a rear-end collision. A rear-end collision is frequently (but not always) the fault of the rear-seat driver because the leading driver is unable to avoid the collision. In the United States, rear-end collisions account for over 29% of all automobile accidents resulting in serious injury. In addition to the grim figures above, rear-end collisions cause around 950,000 injuries and 2,000 deaths each year, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Semi-trucks play an important role in the economy. Every year, America’s trucking industry transports billions of dollars in goods. Unfortunately, millions of big rigs on the roads endanger other motorists. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), big rig trucks’ fatality rate has increased by 30 percent since 2009. There were 4,102 traffic fatalities involving a big rig in 2017 alone.
