Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Every year, car accidents involving pedestrians in California cause numerous injuries and even fatalities. Pedestrian collisions are among the most lethal types of car accidents. Pedestrians are particularly more vulnerable to traffic-related injuries and fatalities due to their overall lack of protection.

In the United States, 5,977 pedestrians were killed on the road last year. In other words, someone is dying about every 88 minutes. In 2017, an estimated 137,000 pedestrians suffered nonfatal injuries in collisions and were taken to the hospital’s emergency room.

There are more pedestrian- and bicyclist-death roads in California than anywhere else. California’s pedestrian fatality rate is 25% higher than the national average. In 2018 alone, there were 893 pedestrian deaths in California and 14,000 injuries on state roadways, just in that state. Distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, inclement weather, wrong-way driving, and failure to obey traffic laws contribute to pedestrian accidents. Drivers’ carelessness is to blame for these mishaps.
