Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrians have a higher crash fatality rate than passengers in an enclosed vehicle. The reason is that pedestrians are unprotected in an accident, unlike passengers of private cars, where they have airbags and seatbelts that can reduce the risk of fatal injuries. Pedestrian deaths in the United States have increased substantially in recent years.

From 2007 to 2016, the number of pedestrian deaths climbed by 27%, while traffic-related deaths declined by 14%. California is a particularly hazardous state for pedestrians because of the state’s notoriously bad roads. It is common knowledge among Californians that pedestrians should use additional caution when crossing busy streets.

When it comes to pedestrian safety, California has some of the worst in the country. According to the California Authority, it is estimated that the death rate in California is 25 percent higher than the national average. Pedestrian deaths and injuries on California’s highways totaled 893 and 14,000, respectively, in 2018.

Children and the elderly are at the highest risk of suffering an injury or fatality while walking anywhere in California. Last year, 4,000 elderly Americans were injured in pedestrian accidents, resulting in more than 700 deaths across the country.
