Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash Statistics
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than 680,000 Americans are injured or killed in hit-and-run accidents annually. According to recent statistics, the number of fatalities from hit-and-runs is rising. These mishaps were responsible for 24% of pedestrian deaths in 2020.
In 2019, speeding accounted for 8.6% of pedestrian deaths, up from 7.2% in 2019 and 2020. Pedestrian-related crashes are estimated to account for 20% or more of traffic fatalities among people aged 45 to 74.
The most common causes of pedestrian accidents, according to the National Highway Safety Administration, are inebriated, distracted, or non-yielding drivers. When crossing the street, proceed with caution.
Pedestrians should always stay on the sidewalks, refrain from drinking or using drugs, and exercise caution when crossing driveways and parking lots. These collisions will be less dangerous as a result.
What To Do Following an Accident
Stopping at the scene of a vehicle collision is always the right thing to do. There are severe penalties for hit-and-runs. Whenever a person is killed or injured in a crash and law enforcement is not yet present, the police or CHP should be notified immediately. Any occupant in the car at the time of the collision must report a crash to police or CHP if the driver was physically incapable of doing so.
You should move your vehicle off the road if no one has been injured or killed. The authorities may impound unmoved or unattended vehicles.
