Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
From 2007 to 2016, the number of people killed in car accidents fell by 14%, according to data compiled by the Governors Highway Safety Association. However, the tragic number of pedestrian fatalities rose by 27 percent throughout this time.
These numbers paint a bleak picture for the future of pedestrians in the United States, where the risk of severe or fatal injuries as a result of a car collision is predicted to rise drastically over the next few years.
Eight hundred nine people lost their lives, and fourteen thousand were injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2012. Based on these statistics, it appears that pedestrians in California have a higher risk of being seriously hurt or killed in a traffic collision than those in any other state in the country.
More than 6,000 people in the United States were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2016. A total of 88 people were dying every minute by the end of that year. The annual number of accidental hospitalizations in the United States is projected to be 137,000.
