Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
Despite legislative and law enforcement initiatives, the safety of bicyclists in the United States remains a major concern. Roughly 800 bicyclists were killed in the United States last year. Almost all of these fatalities may be traced back to California.
By some estimates, there has been a year-on-year decrease in bicycle accidents since 2016. Accidents involving bicycles were reduced by 12 percent between 2000 and 2001. Tragically, though, deaths increased.
In the United States, California has the highest rate of fatalities involving bicycles, at 4.4 per 100,000 people. In 2017, 145 people were killed and 11,116 were injured in California bicycle accidents, as reported by the National Cycling Safety Foundation.
When you choose to ride a bicycle, you should constantly be aware of the risks you’re taking. When drivers repeatedly break the law by going over the speed limit or passing a bicycle without giving it more than three feet of space, they put the lives of everyone on the road in danger. Increased danger means a higher chance of death.
