Fatal Pedestrian Collision Statistics

Based on a study by the Governors Highway Safety Association, 7,485 pedestrians were killed by cars in 2021, the highest number in the previous 40 years.

Pedestrian deaths caused by speeding increased from 7.2% in 2019 to 8.6% in 2020. Speed significantly impacts pedestrian safety as vehicle speed increases exponentially, and the chance of a pedestrian being killed increases from 10% at 23 mph to 90% at 58 mph.

A pedestrian who is struck by a vehicle usually suffers severe injuries. Car-pedestrian collisions are more likely to cause serious injuries to pedestrians.

One of the main reasons why pedestrians are injured or killed is because drivers fail to yield to pedestrians or brake suddenly.

Pedestrians should always use the sidewalks, avoid alcohol and drugs, and cross parking lots and driveways cautiously. They will therefore be less likely to sustain injuries during these encounters.
