How Do I File a Police Report After an Accident

California drivers must report incidents involving injuries, deaths, or property damage over $1,000 to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within ten (10) days of the event. As mandated by Vehicle Code Section 20008, drivers must notify the California Highway Patrol or responding police departments within 24 hours of a fatal or injury accident.

You can submit your DMV and California Highway Patrol reports in two ways:

  1. Whenever an incident occurs, the police must be called. A police report will be issued to you, followed by an investigation and a report submitted to the DMV and CHP.
  2. You may file your report with the DMV and CHP on your own. In this case, complete the necessary forms and send them to the appropriate offices as soon as possible.
