For the most part, this is due to the fact that bicycles are an inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternative mode of transportation. Accidents involving bicycles have unfortunately been on the rise in recent years.
Between 2007 and 2018, 8,908 cyclists were killed in the United States. This number was multiplied by 12 to arrive at the final result: the average. In 2018, 857 cyclists were killed, making it the deadliest year on the road.
Accidents involving bicycles have increased steadily in the Golden State in recent years. A total of 155 people were killed in bicycle accidents in 2018 alone.
According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, cyclist deaths make up 4% of all Californian car accidents. Because it’s more than twice as high as the national average, California is the nation’s leading state for the death of cyclists.
