According to the San Diego Police Department, the fatal crash occurred shortly before 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of Bisby Lake Avenue and Navajo Road in Lake Murray.

A 51-year-old woman was approaching the intersection in her 2020 Kia Soul when she reportedly ran through a red light and collided with a 1986 Yamaha SRX-6 motorcycle heading west on Navajo.
The impact threw the rider from his vehicle and into the ground.

Responding officers arrived at the scene and took the rider to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he later passed away after sustaining major injuries.

The driver was detained while the investigation was ongoing. No further details were immediately available.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics

An estimated 14% of road fatalities, 18% of occupant deaths, and 4% of occupant injuries in 2020 were caused by motorcyclists, according to the National Safety Council. Riders accounted for less than 0.6% of all vehicle miles driven and less than 3% of all licensed drivers. If helmets had been used, more people would have survived.

Over the past decade, both the overall death toll and the death rate have increased by almost 20%. The most recent death toll is 5,579 deaths for every 100,000,000 kilometers traveled.

In the year 2020, California was home to approximately 785 thousand motorcycles. It is one of the two deadliest states for motorcyclists in the United States, with an annual death toll of about 500. Six percent of these deaths can be traced back to riders not having access to helmets.
