Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
It’s not uncommon for pedestrians to be involved in fatal accidents on the road. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to traffic-related injuries and deaths, which is a major factor. Consequently, they have no recourse in the event of an accident.
A total of 5,977 pedestrians were killed across the United States in 2017. Death occurs in the United States on average every 88 minutes. About 137,000 pedestrians were treated in hospital emergency rooms last year, mostly for non-fatal injuries sustained in traffic collisions.
Pedestrians in California have to contend with some of the nation’s most hazardous roadways. It is estimated that California has a 25 percent higher death rate than the rest of the country. Eight hundred ninety-three pedestrians were killed, and 14,000 were injured in California alone in 2018.
Pedestrian accidents are frequently caused by reckless driving, speeding, and drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians.
