Hit-And-Run Crash Statistics

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that approximately 680,000 people in the United States are injured or killed in hit-and-runs every year. Recent studies show an increase in hit-and-run fatalities. In 2020, accident-related pedestrian fatalities accounted for 24% of all pedestrian fatalities.

According to studies, pedestrian deaths and injuries are the highest in California. California had 893 pedestrian fatalities and nearly 14,000 injuries in 2012.

A hit-and-run occurs when one vehicle collides with another without stopping to help. Because victims of hit-and-run accidents are frequently neglected or receive inadequate medical care, the consequences may worsen, and the suffering may intensify.

Drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians or abruptly stop can kill or injure pedestrians.

Pedestrians should walk on sidewalks whenever possible, refrain from using drugs and alcohol, and be careful when crossing parking lots and driveways to avoid getting injured.

What To Do Following an Accident

It would help if you always stopped after a vehicle collision. The law severely punishes hit-and-runs. The police or CHP should be immediately notified if anyone is killed or injured in a crash and law enforcement is not yet present. Any occupant in the car at the time of the accident shall report the collision to the police or the California Highway Patrol if the driver cannot do so.

Move your vehicle off the road if no one has been injured or killed. The authorities may impound cars that do not move or are not removed from the street or highway.
