Hit-and-Run Crash Statistics

Every year, about 680,000 people in the United States are injured or killed as a result of hit-and-run accidents, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. According to recent research, there has been a rise in the number of people killed in hit-and-run accidents. Accidents caused 24% of all pedestrian fatalities in 2020.

Studies have shown that California has the highest rates of pedestrian fatalities and injuries. A total of 893 pedestrians were killed, and nearly 14,000 were injured in California in 2012.

When one driver causes another vehicle to crash without providing aid, they are guilty of a hit-and-run. When people leave the scene of an accident without helping the injured, the situation can become even worse, and the victim’s suffering can become magnified.

Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to being killed or injured by drivers who fail to yield to them or who make an unexpected stop.

Pedestrians should stick to sidewalks to avoid harm, stay sober, and exercise caution when traversing parking lots and driveways.

What Should I Do After an Accident?

After a car crash, it’s best to pull over. Hit-and-run drivers face severe consequences in court. If anyone is killed or injured in an accident and the police or CHP is not yet on the scene, they should be notified immediately. Whether the driver is able to do so or not, everyone else in the car needs to inform the authorities or the California Highway Patrol that an accident has occurred.

If there are no casualties, you should pull over to the side of the road. Vehicles that are immobile and remain on a public road or highway may be impounded by law enforcement.
