Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash Statistics

The hit-and-run driver is to blame for abandoning the victim rather than assisting them and departing the scene. When the suspect is apprehended, they will very definitely be charged with a crime.

In 2015, there were over 737,000 hit-and-run accidents, accounting for 11% of all traffic accidents. Over 138,000 people were injured, and more than 1,800 people were killed in hit-and-run accidents. In 2016, California had the most hit-and-run fatalities of any state in the US, with 337.

One out of every five pedestrian accidents results from a hit-and-run driver. Pedestrians account for 60% of those killed in hit-and-run accidents.

When someone else’s irresponsible behavior strikes a pedestrian, they have few options but to be completely defenseless. Between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian deaths in the United States increased by 27%, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14%.

Some drivers prefer to leave the scene rather than wait for authorities due to intoxication, driving without a license, or fear of being arrested.

Los Angeles Accident Attorneys for Victims

In the event of a traffic accident, both parties must remain at the scene until police arrive. Losing a loved one due to another person’s negligence is traumatic enough. Still, it may be especially stressful if the other motorist flees the scene and abandons the victim.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family is encouraged to seek legal counsel and submit a wrongful death lawsuit. The victim’s family can seek compensation for the losses (such as loss of income and companionship, funeral costs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress) caused by the fatal accident by filing a wrongful death case.
