Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, a total of 5,014 motorcyclists were killed in crashes in 2019. Motorcycle fatalities had decreased since the early 1980s, but they began to rise in 1998 and stayed consistent until 2008.
This number is not surprising given that motorcyclists are 16 times more likely than passengers in enclosed cars to be injured or killed in a car accident.
Helmets are effective in preventing serious head injuries. Helmets were assessed to be 37% effective in preventing motorcycle fatalities. However, the rest of their bodies may still be vulnerable.
Distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, reckless driving, adverse weather, wrong-way driving, and failing to respect traffic laws are common causes of motorcycle accidents.
