Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Despite making up only 3% of registered vehicles, motorcycles contributed to 14% of traffic fatalities, 18% of occupant fatalities, and 4% of occupant injury problems in 2020.
While the death rate per 100 million vehicle miles increased by 23% in 2019, fatal motorcycle accidents increased by 11%. An accident involving a motorcycle rider can have disastrous consequences for everyone involved. Increased collision sensitivity makes motorcyclists more susceptible to catastrophic and fatal injuries.
A helmet can save lives by protecting wearers from harm and reducing the chance of fatal collisions. The IIHS found that motorcyclists who wore helmets had a 37% lower risk of dying in an accident and a 67% lower risk of suffering a brain injury.
In addition to their jackets, pants, shoes, gloves, and other clothing, motorcycle riders should wear protective gear.
What To Do Following an Accident
A report must be filed with the authorities immediately upon their arrival. If you are being interviewed at the scene, please tell the truth about what you saw and heard. It’s important to think things through before speaking and avoid assuming things you don’t fully understand.
Anxious and shaken victims may profusely apologize after an accident, even if they were not at fault. The insurance company can use this as a reason to deny the claim.
