One person was killed and several injuries after a pursuit caused a multi-vehicle crash in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, March 28, 2023.
Authorities confirmed that the deadly collision transpired around 8:00 p.m. near the Pacific Coast Highway and Fifth Street intersection.
According to reports, police attempted to stop a female driver for a traffic violation. They noticed that the woman had switched seats with her male passenger, which resulted in the chase.
Several vehicles collided with the man at one point as he drove the wrong way. The crash involved at least nine vehicles, including one mangled car with at least two doors torn off.
A Taser was used by officers to stop the suspect from fleeing on foot.
No information was immediately available about the conditions of the suspect, the woman, and infant.
According to fire officials, six people were transported in unknown conditions after being extricated from vehicles using the Jaws of Life.
The fatal victim was a woman in her 60s, but her identity has not been revealed.
Further details on the collision are still ongoing.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that more than 5.2 million car accidents occurred in the United States in 2020. Thirty percent (1.6 million) of such crashes resulted in injuries, while less than 1% (35,766) resulted in deaths.
Between 2019 and 2020, fatal crashes increased by 6.8 percent, reaching 1.34 deaths per 100 million vehicles in 2020. Between 2019 and 2020, the injury rate fell by 6.0 percent, resulting in 79 injuries per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
Most traffic accidents result in the death of motorists (67%), passengers (24%), motorcyclists (4%), pedestrians (3%), and pedal cyclists (2%).
A multiple-vehicle collision occurs when three or more drivers are involved in a chain of events. Following an accident, up to six cars may become trapped in the wreckage.
Instead of traffic collisions, multi-vehicle collisions usually result in injuries, fatalities, and property damage. A loss of control or a lack of situational awareness can endanger those nearby. Such collisions are more likely to occur in most cases.
