The suspect was clearly at fault for the accident because he was driving while impaired by narcotics. There are probably few things more reckless and deadly than driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Drivers who are intoxicated put the lives of others and their own in grave danger. There is still a long way to go in reducing the number of people who drink and drive in California and across the country.
At least 10,000 people are killed each year in DUI crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 18% of fatal motor vehicle accidents involve drugs or alcohol.
When drivers are impaired by alcohol or drugs, they are far more likely to be involved in car accidents that result in serious injuries. This is because drunk drivers are more prone to engage in unsafe or reckless behavior. Speeding is a common cause of DUI accidents.
Drunk drivers will most likely fail to notice upcoming intersections and are more prone to disregarding traffic lights and stop signs as their judgment is impaired.
To avoid getting hit by a drunk driver, you should approach intersections with caution, especially at night and during the holidays. Look in every direction to see if oncoming traffic is slamming on their brakes and coming to a stop. Don’t assume that the other driver will behave appropriately if you’re driving.
