A driver was arrested after a hit-and-run collision that injured two people in Humboldt County early Saturday morning, April 2, 2023.
According to authorities, the crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Brenard Road in Loleta.
Reports stated that the 20-year-old suspect, Billy Joe R., and the female victim were allegedly involved in a fight at a nearby apartment earlier that evening.
Both victims were driving away from the property when Robinson allegedly blocked the road by doing “donuts” with his vehicle. The victims left their vehicle and attempted to speak with the suspect and ended up being struck by the man before he fled the scene.
The two adults, one male and one female sustained minor to moderate injuries. Meanwhile, Fortuna Police Department officers arrested the 20-year-old driver at 9th and J Streets in Fortuna.
He was arrested and put into the Humboldt County Correctional Center on accusations of hit and run with bodily harm (VC 20001(a)), assault with a deadly weapon other than a handgun (PC 245(a)(1)), and violence against a spouse (PC 243(e)(1)).

Hit-And-Run Collision Statistics
A recent analysis indicates that the number of fatalities caused by hit-and-runs is rising. A total of 24% of pedestrian fatalities occurred due to hit-and-run accidents in 2020.
California has the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries compared to other states. About 893 pedestrians died in California in 2012, while over 14,000 were injured.
The term “hit-and-run” is used when a vehicle collides with another before leaving the scene without rendering assistance (this includes drivers fleeing on foot from the scene). Additionally, hit-and-run accidents can worsen outcomes because victims are frequently delayed or do not receive medical attention, leading to suffering and social and economic costs.
Pedestrian fatalities and injuries are often caused by failing to yield to pedestrians or braking too suddenly.
It is recommended that pedestrians use sidewalks whenever possible, refrain from using drugs and alcohol, and use caution when crossing parking lots or driveways to avoid collisions.
What To Do Following an Accident
It is always advisable to stop when involved in a vehicle collision. Hit-and-runs are severely punished under the law. When a person is killed or injured in a collision while no law enforcement is present, the police or CHP should be notified immediately. Any occupant in the car during the collision shall notify police or CHP if the driver is physically incapable.
Move your vehicle off the road if no injuries or deaths occur. Vehicles that are not moved or removed from the street or highway may be impounded by the authorities.
