Fatal Pedestrian Crash Statistics
According to a Governors Highway Safety Association study, there were 7,485 pedestrian fatalities in 2021, the highest figure in 40 years.
Pedestrian deaths caused by speeding increased from 7.2% in 2019 to 8.6% in 2020. Speed significantly impacts pedestrian safety as vehicle speed increases exponentially, and the chance of a pedestrian being killed increases from 10% at 23 mph to 90% at 58 mph.
A pedestrian struck by a car usually suffers severe injuries. Car-pedestrian collisions are more likely to harm pedestrians.
One of the main reasons why pedestrians are injured or killed is because drivers fail to yield to pedestrians or brake suddenly.
Pedestrians should always use the sidewalks, avoid alcohol and drugs, and cross parking lots and driveways cautiously. They will therefore be less likely to sustain injuries during these encounters.
