Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

When more than three vehicles are involved in a traffic accident, it is called a multi-vehicle collision. A “pileup” collision occurs when six or more automobiles collide.

A multi-vehicle accident is more likely if there is a lot of fog, rain, or snow on the road. As a result, drivers must be especially cautious and alert. Many individuals are unaware of how dangerous the roadways are while they drive.

According to a recent NHTSA research, more than 13,000 persons perished in multi-vehicle disasters involving passenger automobiles, which account for more than 40% of all motor vehicle accidents each year.

A multi-vehicle collision usually starts with an unexpected movement caused by the first vehicle. This is typically caused by driver error. Even if the driver of the initial vehicle is not at fault, other drivers engaged in the incident may have committed mistakes when reacting (or failing to react) to the circumstance.

Many people involved in multi-car accidents don’t have much time to avoid colliding with cars ahead of them. Because they are afraid, most drivers veer out of their lane, hit the brakes, and crash. Vehicles that attempt to avoid a collision by veering into oncoming traffic frequently generate a larger chain reaction for additional cars to pile up.
