Fatal Head-On Crash Statistics
In a “head-on collision,” the front of one vehicle collides head-on with the front. Head-on crashes are among the most deadly roads, frequently resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, head-on collisions accounted for little over 10 percent of all fatal fatalities in the United States in 2018.
In most cases, a head-on accident happens when a motor vehicle crosses a centerline or a median and collides with another vehicle. Unintentionally or intentionally driving along the wrong side of the road can also result in a head-on accident.
Distracted driving, intoxication, passing on a two-lane road, and rapid lane changes due to construction or halted traffic are just some of how a head-on accident can occur. Roadway defects, vehicle malfunctions, and high speed/loss of control can lead to head-on collisions.
If you notice a vehicle is about to approach you head-on, the best thing you can do is remain in the center of your lane, blow your horn, and brake. This way, it can avoid further damages and potentially save you from sustaining fatal injuries.
