What Should You Do After a Car Accident?

Car accidents cannot be predicted, but you can be ready for one. Keeping a car accident checklist after a collision will help you stay calm and organized. It can advise you on what to do and what not to do, and how to protect your rights. You are not alone after a collision. Follow these steps:

  • Make sure everyone is safe and on scene. Check yourself for injuries before checking with others, and stay calm.
  • If you can, move disabled vehicles to the side of the road. Make sure your emergency flashers are on to avoid further collisions. Find a secure location and wait for the police.
  • Call the authorities to report the accident.
  • Talk to the other driver(s) involved in the collision and exchange names, numbers, and insurance information. Also, take pictures of the cars, license plates, and other relevant information.
  • Do not admit fault, not even to the police. When talking to a police officer, stick to the facts of what happened.
  • Visit the hospital or your primary care physician as soon as possible.
  • California insurers have reporting deadlines. Call as soon as possible and report the crash according to the agent’s directions.
  • You might get a call from the other party’s insurance provider on the day of your accident. Before speaking with an attorney, avoid recording statements or accepting insurance settlement offers.
  • Keep accident-related documents such as a copy of the police report, medical bills, the other driver’s information, injury treatment plans, and other important information.
