If you’ve been injured in a hit-and-run accident, it’s important to act quickly and carefully to safeguard your legal rights. The immediate steps you take following the incident can play a vital role in determining the outcome of your claim. We recommend doing the following:

  1. Get To Safety And Call 911 — If you’re injured or in danger, move to a safe location and call emergency services immediately. Even if the driver fled, reporting the crash is crucial.
  2. Gather Any Information You Can — Try to remember or capture details about the fleeing vehicle, such as color, make, model, or license plate digits. If there were witnesses, get their contact information.
  3. Seek Medical Attention — Even if you feel fine, some injuries can take hours or days to appear. Getting a medical evaluation right away documents your injuries and strengthens your case.

Hit-And-Run Accident Statistics

A 2022 report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed a worrying increase in fatal hit-and-run accidents. It linked 2,932 deaths to drivers who left the scene of crashes.

The report also found that hit-and-run incidents disproportionately affected pedestrians and cyclists. One in four pedestrian fatalities that year—1,910 out of 7,522 deaths—resulted from hit-and-run collisions. Similarly, 24% of cyclist deaths involved fleeing drivers, with 265 out of 1,105 fatalities occurring under these circumstances.

Overall, there was a 0.5% increase in fatal hit-and-run crashes compared to 2021. Pedestrian deaths in these incidents rose by 4.3% (an increase of 79 fatalities), while cyclist deaths surged by 18% (40 additional fatalities).

These troubling trends highlight the rising risk of hit-and-run accidents. This is especially dangerous for vulnerable road users who often don’t get help right away after a crash.
