Big Rig Accident Statistics
Truck accidents result in some of the most severe injuries of any type of auto accident. This is due to the increased size and weight of a truck in a collision, which generates more force than smaller, lighter vehicles.
The greater the force generated in a collision, the more severe the injuries. Many of the injuries are fatal.
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, the fatality rate for large rig vehicles has climbed by 30% since 2009. In 2017, there were 4,102 traffic fatalities involving a big rig.
Between 2009 and 2015, semi-truck accident fatalities increased by 22%. A tractor-trailer was involved in approximately 11% of all fatal traffic accidents in 2015.
The truck driver’s carelessness causes many truck accidents. The driver could be distracted or otherwise not paying attention. After too many hours on the road, they may nod off or succumb to “highway hypnosis.” Drugs, alcohol, prescription medications, or a dangerous combination of these substances could affect them.
