Authorities determined that the two-vehicle accident that happened last May 7, 2022 in the Midway District was caused by a suspected DUI driver.
The speeding 31-year-old man was identified as Edgar Suarez E. Not only was he speeding, but he was also driving while he was under the influence.
Due to his negligent behavior, he crashed into a westbound 1999 Toyota Tacoma truck. The Toyota Tacoma truck then crashed into a northbound 2015 Toyota Sienna. The mishap resulted in two deaths and three injuries.
The two deceased victims were identified as 23-year-old Ahmed A. and 81-year-old Suad A. They were sitting in the backseat of the van and were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the van were injured and received treatment in the area hospital.
Meanwhile, the suspect sustained broken bones and was treated. He was then released from the hospital and is now in the downtown jail, facing two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI charges, and a misdemeanor count of driving without a license.
The suspect has been detained without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court in downtown San Diego on Wednesday afternoon.
The probe is still going on. Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash Statistics
The state of California has a high rate of fatal car accidents. It was undeniable a decade ago that the population of California had skyrocketed. In recent years, the number of people driving themselves to their destinations has grown.

Some people prefer to handle personal injury claims on their own rather than hire a lawyer. But it is important to be aware of the potential risks. Without legal representation, injury victims receive lower settlements than those who have legal representation.
Accidents involving multiple vehicles are more difficult to resolve than accidents involving only two vehicles. Victims may find it difficult to deal with a multi-vehicle crash lawsuit because of the pain and suffering they have endured since the accident.
