[05-12-2023] Four Juvenile Injured, Two Seriously, in Rollover Crash on I-5 near CorningFour people were injured, two of them seriously, following a solo-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 5, south of Corning, on Friday afternoon, May 12, 2023.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the single-car crash occurred around 3:35 p.m. along I-5, south of Liberal Avenue, near the Rolling Hills Casino.

18-year-old Deana M. was traveling south on a pickup in the highway’s right lane when the car in front of her abruptly braked and slowed down. Avoiding a collision, she swerved to the left but overcorrected. The truck lost control and went into the grassy median before rolling over multiple times and coming to rest on its roof.

A female juvenile passenger in the backseat was thrown out of the car for allegedly not wearing a seatbelt. Another female juvenile passenger had to be extricated by the responding CalFire firefighters.

Both of them sustained major head and neck injuries and were airlifted by a medical helicopter to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. They were transferred to U.C. Davis Hospital in Sacramento due to the severity of their wounds.

A male juvenile passenger sustained lacerations to his head and contusions while the driver had a cut to her leg. They were taken by ground ambulance to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff.

The freeway’s southbound lanes were closed as workers cleaned up the scene. The investigation continues, and alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor.
