Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrians and motorcycle riders are more likely to be injured or killed on the road than other road users. This is because they are not adequately protected in the event of an accident.
Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents have increased dramatically. Between 2007 and 2016, the number of people killed in traffic decreased by 14%, but the number of people killed while walking increased by 27%.
There were 5,977 pedestrian deaths in the United States in 2017. One person dies every 88 minutes, according to this estimate. An estimated 137,000 non-fatal pedestrian injuries were treated in hospital emergency rooms in 2017.
Compared to other states, California has the highest number of pedestrian deaths and serious injuries. Last year, 893 people died and 14,000 were injured in pedestrian-car accidents in California.
Driver inattention, excessive speed, and failure to yield to pedestrians are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents. An experienced lawyer’s advice is critical in such situations.
