According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, officials responded to a reported traffic collision just after 12:30 a.m. near Normandie Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Authorities stated that the victims were in a white BMW, leaving a drive-through restaurant. As they turned left, a Jeep traveling at high speed collided with the victim’s vehicle. The impact sent the BMW across the roadway, where it collided with several parked cars.

Firefighters rushed to rescue the victims from the BMW in front of onlookers. The Jaws of Life opened at least one vehicle door to rescue a trapped passenger and the driver. After rescue operations, the firefighters declared both of the victims dead.

The Jeep’s driver allegedly leaped out of the car and fled the scene on foot. Officials said witnesses pursued and followed him, resulting in his arrest. Authorities are investigating whether the suspect participated in a nearby street takeover before the crash.

The investigation is still underway, and it is unclear whether the suspect was driving while intoxicated.
