Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

The Sacramento region is seeing an increase in bicycles, both as a mode of transportation and as a means of physical fitness. Even though bikers have the same rights and obligations as drivers of motor vehicles, some drivers don’t believe that bicyclists should be allowed on the road.

You’re at a higher risk of serious injury when you crash into a car or truck if you’re on a bike. You have no protection against a vehicle that weighs several thousand pounds. This can lead to devastating injuries such as brain trauma, spinal cord injury, and paralysis, as well as severe scarring and even death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle incidents in 2016, accounting for 2% of all road fatalities.

Bicycle deaths in California are the highest in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between 2016 and 2018, 455 cyclists were killed in California.

Bicycles, just like vehicles, are subject to the same set of laws that apply to automobiles and other trucks on the road. It is possible to ride a bike on the road without a designated bike lane. There are times when bicyclists are disregarded by motorists, who may even try to pass them when it’s not safe for them.

Following the same rules as those who drive automobiles is the best way to avoid a collision. They have to stop at all stop signs and ride on a straight path.
