Truck Accident Statistics

Big-rig is the term used for the tractor-trailers and semis with which we share the road. These names are used interchangeably for huge cargo-carrying trucks.

Compared to other car accidents, tractor-trailer accidents are the most dangerous. It’s mainly because of the enormous size of these trucks. Stopping a big rig with a lot of weight on it takes more time.

Every fifteen minutes, a person loses their life in a collision with a semi-truck in the United States. In the 500,000 transportation accidents that occur each year in the United States, about 5,000 truckers are killed.

Truck accidents kill about 113 people and injure about 3,000 people in California every year. Every year, between 200 and 300 people lose their lives in truck accidents in the state of California.

Between 2009 and 2015, more people were killed in semi-truck accidents than ever before. Tractor-trailer trucks were involved in 11 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2015.

At speeds below 40mph, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration mandates that drivers keep a 4-second distance from heavy trucks. Speeds greater than 40 mph necessitate the addition of an extra second.
