Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics

You may not have known that motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely than car passengers to be injured and 35 times more likely to die in a crash.

Los Angeles is a great place to ride a motorcycle because of its mild climate. Because of our temperate climate, riders don’t have to deal with seasonal weather issues. All-year-round motorcycle riding is possible if there isn’t much rain or snow or ice.

Sadly, this means that a large number of motorcycles are on the road at any given time. This can be a recipe for disaster, especially when combined with the notoriously congested streets of Los Angeles. A motorcycle accident is more likely to occur when there is a lot of traffic.

More than 200 accidents occurred each year from the beginning of 2014 to the end of 2018, with 235 accidents occurring each year. Figures like these indicate that Los Angeles experiences 255 motorcycle collisions a year.

In 2019, 5,014 motorcycle fatalities were reported by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation. Since the early 1980s, motorcycle fatalities had been declining, but they began to rise again in 1998 and remained so until 2008.

Also, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely than car passengers to be injured or killed in an accident.

Almost 70% of motorcycle accidents are caused by vehicles failing to see the motorcycle at an intersection. A lack of visibility from other vehicles is a major cause of motorcycle accidents.

There is, however, a way to avoid a motorcycle accident that results in death. According to research, wearing a helmet reduces the risk of serious head injuries. Helmet use could reduce motorcycle fatalities by 37%.
