An off-duty Whittier Police Department Officer identified as 25-year-old Lanell W. was killed following a deadly motorcycle crash in Lynwood on Saturday afternoon, June 4, 2022.
The deadly collision transpired at approximately 3:32 p.m. in the area of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Beechwood Avenue.
The officer was involved in an off-duty crash with another vehicle. A concerned caller reported that a motorcycle was on fire and the rider was on the ground. It was unclear whether the motorcycle collided with another car or smashed into something.
Unfortunately, the off-duty officer was killed in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Last October, the officer joined the department and was previously working for the LA County Sheriffs.
Additional information about the accident is unavailable at the moment. It’s unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
An active investigation of the case is currently underway.
Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Drivers of cars have more safety features than people who ride motorcycles. They go at the same speed as cars and on the same roads, but they don’t have the same safety features.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that 11% of all traffic accidents in the United States are caused by motorcyclists (NHTSA). In 2018, 82,000 motorcyclists were hurt, and 4,985 died.
This number doesn’t come as a surprise since motorcyclists are 16 times more likely to get hurt or die in a car accident than people riding in cars with doors.
The sad truth is that riding a motorcycle in California is not exactly safe. California has more registered motorcycles than any other state. There are more than 800,000 registered motorcycles in California. In 2017, there were 16,505 motorcycle accidents on California roads. Fifteen thousand five hundred twenty-seven people were hurt, and 541 people died.
Some drivers may not be able to see motorcycles, especially when it is dark. Wearing clothes that reflect light is a good way to get other drivers’ attention on the road. Some people may not think this is stylish, but staying safe on the road is more important than making a fashion statement.
