Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, 33,654 fatal car accidents resulted in 36,560 deaths in 2018.
Accidents involving numerous vehicles are unusual, but the number of people injured and property losses is staggering when they do occur.
There is a lot of traffic in the larger San Diego area. Collisions are more likely to occur when there is more traffic. San Diegans are familiar with the difficult locations on Interstate 5, which is frequently crowded from downtown near the airport up the coast past La Jolla.
According to the most recent data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, 19,938 car accidents in San Diego County in 2019 resulted in injury or death. This represents a 1.6 percent decline over the previous year.
When many cars collide, a multi-vehicle collision happens. When six or more cars are involved, the traffic event is known as a “pile-up.”
These incidents are typical on highways, where hundreds of vehicles pass side by side at high speeds. As a result, many oncoming cars find it impossible to come to a safe stop, resulting in a collision with other vehicles ahead.
According to the National Highway Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), multi-vehicle accidents account for about one-fourth of traffic deaths, with over 13,000 persons killed each year.
Disputes about who was at fault in a multi-vehicle accident usually ended in acrimonious judicial battles. You may lose your entitlement to compensation for your injuries if you become involved in a legal battle.
