Fatal Bicycle Crash Statistics
Riding a bicycle on the road, especially in congested areas, can be dangerous and, in rare cases, fatal. In 2016, 840 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle accidents, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Road Safety Administration.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 13 road deaths and 1,315 injuries in Orange County bicycle accidents have occurred in recent years.
When a bicycle collides with a car, the car’s driver almost always walks away unharmed. According to the law, bicyclists are considered “vulnerable road users,” or those who are most likely to be injured in an accident. Bicyclists can sustain serious and life-threatening injuries in car collisions, even if they are wearing helmets.
Bicycle accidents are frequently caused by drivers who fail to yield the right of way, run a stop sign or red light, pay insufficient attention to the road, or text while driving. A tragic bicycle accident could be caused by drunk or careless driving.
