Pedestrian Accident Statistics
According to the NHTSA report, one pedestrian is killed in traffic every two hours. Furthermore, every 8 minutes, one pedestrian is injured by driving.
Every year, approximately 110,000 pedestrians are injured in the United States. The NHTSA also reports that about 6,227 pedestrians were killed in 2018, a 250 increase from the previous year.
Pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks, whether marked or unmarked. Even though pedestrians have the right-of-way, they are nonetheless expected to follow all traffic laws. When approaching a crossing with your car, you must slow down and be extra cautious to keep pedestrians safe.
Pedestrians should constantly follow safety measures to avoid being hit by a car. While there is no guarantee that an accident will not occur, following prescribed safety recommendations considerably reduces the likelihood of being found accountable if an accident does occur.
However, even if they are cautious and follow all driving laws, pedestrians might be involved in traffic accidents. Being a defensive pedestrian is more difficult than being a defensive driver. When a car is speeding, it is far more difficult for pedestrians to escape danger.
