Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
Bicycles are classified as vehicles under California law. The rules of the road apply equally to bicyclists and drivers of automobiles to avoid collisions. Every time they see a red light, they must stop and ride in a straight line.
Bicycles and other modes of transportation, such as cars, are governed by the same set of rules. They have the right to ride in the street when there is no designated bike lane. Therefore, motorists frequently ignore or attempt to pass cyclists who ride too closely.
National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) data shows that 840 cyclists were killed by vehicles in 2016, accounting for 2% of all road deaths.
Bicycle accidents kill the most people in California each year. More than 400 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents in California between 2016 and 2018.
Wearing a helmet, performing routine maintenance on your tires and brakes, and making sure your body is proportional to the size of your bike are all effective ways to keep yourself safe when riding a bicycle.
