A 14-year-old boy was fatally injured in a hit-and-run accident in Escondido on Saturday, June 25, 2022.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. at the Bear Valley Parkway and Grand Avenue intersection.
According to Lieutenant Scott Walters, the boy was walking east in a crosswalk against a “don’t walk” signal when a driver headed north on Bear Valley Parkway struck him.
Officers found the boy lying in the roadway and started CPR on him until paramedics arrived and took over. The boy was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he later died. The authorities have not yet disclosed his identity.
Investigators determined the car that struck the boy was a black 2021 Lexus RX 350 after searching physical evidence, witness statements, and law enforcement databases.
The suspected driver was later identified as Jon K., a 70-year-old Escondido resident. He was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and taken to the Vista jail.
Hit-and-run Accident Statistics
A hit-and-run occurs when a driver runs over someone, another vehicle, or an object and then leaves the accident scene. Fatal hit-and-runs are becoming more common, and the number of deaths they cause is rising.
Following a peak of 2,012 in 2016, ValuePenguin researchers found that fatal hit-and-runs increased from 1,342 in 2010 to 1,939 in 2019. Deaths rose by 44%, from 1,393 to 2,005 in the same time frame.
California had the highest percentage of fatal hit-and-runs during this time.
