A 28-year-old man identified as Lolomanaia S. from Hayward died, while three pedestrians were injured in a speeding-related collision on Sunday, June 26, 2022.
The accident happened on a Sunday morning in the 5400 block of International Boulevard.
According to Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, two officers attempted to stop the car from moving almost 100 miles per hour before the collision. The officers lost control of the vehicle when they could not keep up with it.
The Nissan hit another vehicle in the road as the car continued on International Boulevard.
The Nissan then struck several motorcycles and parked cars before hitting a pedestrian walking along the sidewalk. The 19-year-old driver was arrested soon after.
Chief Armstrong said the two Oakland police officers had been placed on administrative leave because of this accident.
The police department is investigating whether the officers followed the proper protocol since they may have spoken to the driver before the collision.
The case remains under investigation.
Speeding-Related Accident Statistics
California has some of the strictest speeding laws in the country, with a maximum speed of 70 mph on most highways. Unfortunately, many drivers do not take these laws seriously, and speeding-related crashes are common. The consequences of these crashes can be severe, often leading to serious injuries or even death.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), driving a vehicle over the speed limit killed 9,378 people in 2018 alone. Traffic fatalities have increased during the pandemic despite fewer drivers on the road. Traffic deaths were up 13.1% in the third quarter of 2020 compared to 2019.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), speeding contributes to nearly a quarter of fatal car crashes in the state. Teen drivers are the most likely to be tempted to speed, so addressing this issue is more important than ever.
Most teen drivers have yet to develop the necessary driving experience and skills to operate a vehicle at high speeds. Teen drivers are responsible for 43% of the speeding-related roadway fatalities in the U.S. from 2015 to 2019. Speeding-related accidents are avoidable, and careful driving can significantly reduce the chances of being involved.

Speeding on the roadways is one of the most dangerous activities a pedestrian can engage in, often resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. However, proving speeding-related car accident liability, responsibility, and negligence can be a challenging legal task. An injury lawsuit must be filed within a specific time frame, or the victim loses the legal right to do so under the law. Additionally, insurance companies try to avoid making full and fair payments by intimidating accident victims after the accident.
